In a significant personal decision, Suchetna Bhattacharya, the daughter of former West Bengal Chief Minister and CPI(M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, has announced her intention to undergo gender reassignment. Aged 41, Suchetna, who has identified as a man from an early age, will be changing her name to Suchetan as she embarks on this transformative journey.
Seeking guidance from legal professionals and consulting with psychiatrists to strengthen her mental well-being, Suchetan is preparing for the upcoming gender reassignment surgery. It is important to note that she has requested the media to refrain from involving her parents in this matter, emphasizing that this is her personal decision.
Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, who served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for nearly 11 years, from 2000 to April 2011, has been relatively less active in politics due to his ongoing health issues. Suchetan's mother, Meera Bhattacharya, is currently fitted with a pacemaker.
The news of Suchetan's gender change was first shared by leftist activist Suprabha Roy in a Facebook post. Suprabha recounted their conversation, during which Suchetan expressed his long-standing identification as a trans man, highlighting that the forthcoming change will involve aligning his physical appearance with his gender identity.
Expressing confidence in receiving her parents' support, Suchetan emphasized the significance of maintaining strong bonds with loved ones amid societal reactions. Undeterred by potential criticism, Suchetan is determined to continue advocating for the LGBTQIA+ community, having been actively involved in raising awareness about their issues and fighting for their rights. Although not extensively involved in politics, Suchetan is recognized as an environmental activist and social worker.
As Suchetan prepares for the next chapter of life, this decision marks a significant moment in her personal journey and is expected to contribute to the momentum of the LGBTQIA+ movement.
